Case studies in design for injection molding

    Abstract

    A computer aided design (CAD) approach involving both mold filling simulation and stress analysis has been used to illustrate design for manufacture considerations in injection molding of thermoplastics parts. Portions of several case studies with the idea of linking process design, mold design and part performance at the design stage are presented. Performance at elevated temperatures as well as dimensional stability are critical functional requirements of the part. Variations in predominant fiber orientations close to and away from the gate as well as those resulting from mold design changes are illustrated. The effects of process parameters and mold design parameters on part shrinkage and warpage are demonstrated. Stress and displacement profiles resulting from inhomogeneous and anisotropic stiffness due to processing are compared with the isotropic case.
