    Abstract

Several types of nanoparticles were processed with Dow's PELLTHANE™ 2102-90A for flammability and thermophysical characterization. An analogous test to the Underwriters Inc standard test UL 94 using propane instead of natural gas, and cone calorimetry was utilized to study the flammability properties of this novel class of thermoplastic polyurethane nanocomposites. The coefficient of thermal expansion, thermal conductivity, and specific heat at elevated temperatures were also determined. The thermal conductivity of the material increased with the addition of carbon nanofibers and nanoclay and the coefficient of thermal expansion went through a maximum with respect to nanofiber loading. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 228th ACS National Meeting (Philadelphia, PA, 8/22-26/2004).
