    Abstract

A quantitative study of the axial and tangential components of the mean velocity in a 3 double prime -hydrocyclone using laser doppler anemometry and flow visualization by dye injection has revealed multiple reverse flows in the vortex core, which are coherent over a significant portion of the hydrocyclone. Little radial mixing occurs between the secondary flows and the outer helical flow. A 2:1 contraction in the vortex finder causes an annular flow only 3 mm thick countercurrent to a small upward jet-like flow on the axis. This secondary flow extends over more than half of the length of the hydrocyclone and was unexpected.
