Hybrid materials from epoxide-substituted POSS frameworks

Abstract

The preparation, characterization and utilization of three different kinds of epoxide-substituted polyhedral oligosilsesquioxanes (POSS) frameworks are discussed. There are three kinds of POSS frameworks, one of which are those made of trisilanols. There are also POSS frameworks that are made by controlled partial epoxidation of readily available (vinyl)8Si8O12, and those made by epoxidation of R8Si8O12. Regardless of how they were created, these three kinds of POSS frameworks all react readily with Jeffamine D-230 to facilitate the production of inorganic/organic epoxies.
