Abstract

This chapter discusses personal and contextual factors that may influence motivation. It considers the behavior that makes teachers, parents, and researchers conclude that individuals differ in motivation. It explores basic findings based on behaviorist theories and intrinsic motivation theories, and elaborates in greater detail on the various effects of rewards and praise for intrinsic motivation. It explores a variety of actions, feelings, and thoughts that both teachers and researchers describe as indicators of motivation, and underlines the importance for educators as well as researchers. It highlights the concern of studying observable behaviors that reflect engagement in a particular activity, as well as clarifying what motivational researchers study when they study motivation, what they observe, how they measure, and what they are trying to predict and explain.
