Reactive distillation for the biorefinary: Pilot plant synthesis of succinic acid esters

    Abstract

    The most outstanding example of commercial success for a pure biobased commodity is ethanol production as an alternative fuel (over 36 million ton/yr worldwide). A discussion covers a process to upgrade succinic acid by esterification with ethanol using a reactive distillation; simulations using Aspen Plus; use of a simple equilibrium stage model to fit experimental results; up-scaling and economic feasibility studies; conditions to increase dehydration of ethanol; overcoming chemical equilibrium limitations; a simple equilibrium stage model; optimum conditions of the operation. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the AIChE 2010 Spring National Meeting (San Antonio, TX 3/21-25/2010).
