Resin transfer molding of ribbed composite panels

    Abstract

    Design strategies and process design guidelines have been developed for resin transfer molding of large ribbed panels, based on the analysis of permeation and flow. Short shots have been molded to observe the flow patterns in mold filling. These patterns are compared with results from mold filling simulations to quantify the effect of edge permeability in resin transfer molding of ribbed panels. Several layers of lightweight plain weave glass fabric have been used for making the preforms. The in-plane permeability was evaluated using an edge gated rectangular mold. An isophthalic acid based unsaturated polyester resin and 1.5 wt % of methyl ethyl ketone peroxide as initiator were used for molding. Experimentally evaluated resin and preform parameters were used in the mold filling simulations.
